On Portability of Genius
"You have to have a bunch of dimensions of yourself. You have to be able to adapt in this world." - Mike Tyson
How much does our environment really influence our ability to perform?
This question has been in my mind for quite some time. I used to believe that performance was deeply tied to a specific space. Take my own example that throughout school and college, I always studied in my room at home. I never ventured into libraries or friends’ places to study. That routine gave me the impression that I could only perform at my best in a familiar, controlled setting. But my perspective has shifted. I now believe that true genius must be portable. What does that mean? Let me explain.
Think of a sportsperson, say, a cricketer. He might train on his home ground, but when it comes to the real game, he has to perform in stadiums across the globe, on pitches that behave differently, in climates that vary, under crowds that roar in unfamiliar tongues. The same principle applies to any field. The environment is not a constant, it’s a variable. And the role of the performer is to adapt. That’s where genius lies.
So now, I believe that if someone truly wants to excel in any domain, they must cultivate an internal environment that travels with them. The mind becomes the home ground. It sounds like common sense, like most timeless philosophies do, but it works. And that’s what matters.
Let me know your thoughts too. That’s all for today. Cheers, until next time…!💪
